Medication;

After your diagnosis, private medication may be considered as part of your treatment plan. Any decision to prescribe is made carefully by a qualified clinical prescriber, taking into account your individual needs, medical history, and preferences. We follow the guidance set out by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which recommends both stimulant and non-stimulant medication options for ADHD where appropriate. We can prescribe for both types.

It is important to note that progressing to private medication forms a separate agreement with the clinic. Your initial screening and diagnostic assessment do not include medication, and any prescribing or titration process is arranged under a new agreement.

For children residing in Norfolk, progression to medication is managed in collaboration with the Norfolk Paediatric Service. In these cases, medication is provided by the NHS, and the child is subsequently supported and monitored by Norfolk Community Paediatric Services for ongoing care.

Stimulant medications (such as methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine) are typically the first-line treatment. They work by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, helping to improve attention, focus, and impulse control. Many people experience noticeable benefits relatively quickly. However, they can also have side effects, including reduced appetite, difficulty sleeping, increased heart rate, or feelings of anxiety, and they may not be suitable for everyone.

Non-stimulant medications (such as atomoxetine or guanfacine) are often considered where stimulants are not effective, not tolerated, or not appropriate. These medications work more gradually and may take several weeks to show full benefit. They can help with attention, emotional regulation, and impulsivity. Potential drawbacks include fatigue, dizziness, low mood, or gastrointestinal discomfort.

All medication options are discussed in detail with you, and treatment is closely monitored to ensure safety, effectiveness, and ongoing suitability. Private medication costs fluxuate due to worls market supply and demand pressures, after diagnosis we would be pleased to give you up to date private medication costs
